Hand washing your kilt

Hand washing your kilt is an excellent way to preserve its quality and longevity. With a few simple steps, you can effectively clean your kilt without causing damage or compromising the fabric. Here's how to hand wash your kilt the right way:

Check the care label:

Before getting started, always check the care label for specific washing instructions. Some kilts may require professional cleaning or have specific care requirements.

Fill a basin with cold water:

Avoid using hot water, as it can cause shrinking or colour bleeding. Add a small amount of mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics and mix well.

Submerge the kilt:

Gently immerse the kilt in the water, making sure it is fully submerged. Be careful not to twist or wring the fabric.

Gently agitate:

Using your hands, lightly agitate the water to help the detergent penetrate the fibres. Be gentle and avoid excessive rubbing or pulling on the fabric.

Soak for 15-30 minutes:

Allow the kilt to soak for up to 30 minutes to help loosen dirt and grime. For heavily soiled kilts, you may need to extend the soaking time.

Rinse thoroughly:

Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cold water. Gently submerge the kilt, agitating the water to rinse away any remaining detergent. Repeat this process until the water runs clear and free of suds.

Press out excess water:

Gently press the kilt against the side of the basin to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the fabric, as this can cause damage or distortion.

Dry flat:

Lay the kilt flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel and kilt together, gently pressing to absorb additional moisture. Unroll the towel and lay the kilt flat on another dry towel, reshaping the pleats as necessary. Allow the kilt to air dry, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
